Where is the best place to plant lavender?

“I bought these beautiful potted lavender plants, now where should they go?”

Consider the needs of the plant. Lavender likes three things:

Sun

Lavender likes sun. Period. Choose a location in full sun (partial will work, but not as well).

Drainage

Dry feet make for happy lavender. If your soil is thick with clay or soggy, consider amending it with a good amount of perlite, vermiculite, decomposed granite, or other drainage-enhancing material.

Alkaline Soil

Planting this lavender in soil heavy with acidic conifer mulch has caused it to turn yellow

Lavender likes a moderate to alkaline soil PH.

  • What is PH?
  • How does PH affect nutrient uptake?
  • How do I safely adjust the PH of a garden bed?

Choose a location with a PH between 6.5-7.5

If you have an abundance of conifer, consider oyster shells or lime (sparingly) to balance the PH

Give them these three things in fair moderation, and you should have thriving lavender plants which will grow and produce for years.
